چکیده

We investigate the universal property of curvatures in surface models that display a flat phase and a rough phase whose criticality is described by the Gaussian model. Earlier we derived a relation between the Hessian of the free energy and the Gaussian coupling constant in the six-vertex model. Here we show its validity in a general setting using renormalization group arguments. The general validity of the relation is confirmed numerically in the restricted solid-on-solid model by comparing the Hessian of the free energy and the Gaussian coupling constant in a transfer matrix finite-size-scaling study. The Hessian relation gives a clear understanding of the universal curvature jump at roughening transitions and facet edges and also provides an efficient way of locating the phase boundaries. @S1063-651X~97!12007-4#

Relation between growth and melt shapes of ice crystals

Under near-equilibrium growth or melt conditions, ice crystals in the melt are bounded by two parallel facets (basal planes or c-facets) and rounded surfaces between the facets. We observed such disk-shaped ice crystals perpendicularly to the c-axis in two and three dimensions, and found that the growth andmelt shapes are asymmetric. On imposition of a small driving force, a rounded crystal gre...

Free and constrained equilibrium states in a variational problem on a surface

We study the equilibrium states for an energy functional with a parametric force field on a region of a surface. Consideration of free equilibrium states is based on Lyusternik - Schnirelman's and Skrypnik's variational methods. Consideration of equilibrium states under a constraint of geometrical character is based on an analog of Skrypnik's method, described in [P. Vyridis, {it Bifurcation in...

Cylindrical equilibrium shapes of fluid membranes

Within the framework of the well-known curvature models, a fluid lipid bilayer membrane is regarded as a surface embedded in the three-dimensional Euclidean space whose equilibrium shapes are described in terms of its mean and Gaussian curvatures by the so-called membrane shape equation. In the present paper, all solutions to this equation determining cylindrical membrane shapes are found and p...

Application of surface-derived attributes in determining boundaries of potential-field sources

This paper describes an edge detection method based on surface-derived attributes. The surface-derived attributes are widely used in the interpretation ofseismic datain two main categories: (1) derivative attributes including the dip angle and the azimuth; (2) derivative attributes including curvature attributes.    In general, the magnitude of the normal curvature of a surface (curvature attri...

Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals

The problem of finding the equilibrium shape of a small particle by the Wulff construction is reviewed briefly, with emphasis on its applications to liquid crystals. The proof of Wulff’s theorem is stated in a concise mathematical form. Some typical equilibrium shapes of liquid crystalline cirops are described. When there is orientational order of the molecules in the liquid crystal but no tran...
